Where Should Families Choose to Live in Lombok?
A neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood guide for expats and long-stay families considering South Lombok.
Where to Live in Lombok as a Family? The answer depends on what kind of day-to-day life you are imagining. South Lombok has distinct areas, each with a different feel and the right one for your family comes down to the ages of your children, how you work, and how much you value proximity to town versus space and quiet.
This guide covers the main areas honestly: what works, what is still developing, and who each neighbourhood suits best. All of it is based on what we see on the ground, not a brochure version of Lombok.
1. Selong Belanak, Beach Life With a Growing Community
For families who want the full island feel. Beach access, open space, a relaxed pace. Selong Belanak is the natural starting point. The bay is wide and calm, with shallow water that is genuinely safe for children year-round. Beginner surfers love it. So do parents who want to actually relax on the beach instead of watching anxiously from the shore.
The town itself is growing well. New restaurants and coffee shops are opening month to month, and there is a real café culture forming without the noise and density of Kuta. It still has the Lombok pace — just more comfortable than it was a few years ago.

What works for families
- One of the safest beaches in South Lombok for children. Calm, flat, and swimmable year-round
- A growing café and restaurant scene that is becoming more international without losing its character
- Strong connectivity, internet infrastructure has improved significantly
- A tight-knit expat community that is established but not oversaturated
- Good variety of family homes and longer-stay villas for rent or purchase
The trade-offs
For school-age children needing a full curriculum school, Selong Belanak means a drive to Kuta. Most families based here do their Kuta trips in batches, one or two days a week rather than daily. For many that rhythm works well. For others it becomes friction.
Best suited to: Families with younger children, those working remotely, and anyone who has decided they want to live by the sea rather than near the centre.
2. Serangan, A Quieter Residential Option, Five Minutes From Selong Belanak
Serangan sits just five minutes from Selong Belanak and is increasingly interesting for families who want more space and a quieter setting without being far from anything. It is not remote, it is a different residential character.
A new school opened there recently. Around 25 children already enrolled, and the family community is actively forming. That kind of early-stage momentum is worth paying attention to. Areas that build a school before they build the noise tend to attract the right kind of long-term residents.

What works for families
- Five minutes from Selong Belanak, close enough to access its beach and amenities easily
- A new school with around 25 children already enrolled a growing family community forming around it
- Quieter and more spacious than Selong Belanak town, with a more residential feel
- Torok, one of South Lombok’s most beautiful and secluded beaches, is immediately adjacent
- Land and rental values that give families more space for less than closer-to-centre areas
The trade-offs
Serangan is still early. The school is new, the community is forming, and the amenities are limited compared to Selong Belanak or Kuta. Families who move here now are early adopters which can be exactly the right call, or a test of patience depending on your expectations.
Best suited to: Families who value quiet, space, and being part of a forming community. Also well-suited to those with younger children who do not yet need a large school environment.
3. Kuta Lombok — The Practical Choice for Families With School-Age Children
Kuta is the hub of South Lombok. It is the most developed area and the easiest to settle into especially for families arriving for the first time and needing infrastructure from day one.
For families with older children who need a full school setup, Kuta has a Cambridge curriculum school with over 200 students. That is a meaningful number. It means year groups, social cohort, and a proper school environment rather than a small international programme.

What works for families
- A Cambridge school with over 200 students, the strongest full-curriculum option in South Lombok
- The widest choice of restaurants, supermarkets, and international goods on the island
- Reliable fibre-optic internet across most of the town
- Medical clinics with English-speaking staff
- An established expat family community with playgroups, sports clubs, and social infrastructure
The trade-offs
Kuta moves faster than the rest of South Lombok. Construction is ongoing, traffic picks up during peak season, and some of the central beach areas get busy. Families who want more space and quiet tend to base themselves in the hillside areas or quieter roads just outside central Kuta, close enough to use all the infrastructure, far enough to breathe.
Best suited to: Families with school-age children, newly arrived expats, and remote workers who need reliable infrastructure from day one.
4. Tampah — A Managed Environment for Families Who Want Predictability
Tampah sits just west of Selong Belanak and operates differently from the rest of South Lombok. It is home to a master-planned development with consistent architecture, maintained infrastructure, and a curated resident community. Rather than a town that has evolved organically, Tampah offers a structured setting where the surroundings are controlled.

What works for families
- A private, low-density environment no unexpected construction next door, no through traffic
- Maintained roads and shared facilities within the development
- Proximity to Selong Belanak without being in the middle of town
- A community of like-minded residents, typically professionals and careful long-term buyers
- Strong appeal for families who want peace of mind about their immediate environment
The trade-offs
Tampah is not the choice for families who want to be embedded in local life or feel the energy of a developing town. It is deliberately quiet. For anything beyond the basics, residents head to Selong Belanak or Kuta.
Best suited to: Families building or buying a permanent home who prioritise environmental quality, security, and consistency above all else.
5. Are Guling—For Surf Families and Those Who Know What They Are Choosing
Are Guling is about 10 minutes west of Kuta and has a completely different energy. It is quieter, more local, and built around the surf. Families who settle here tend to be deliberate about it. They have chosen the lifestyle over the convenience.

What works for families
- Direct access to one of South Lombok’s best surf breaks
- More affordable land and rental values more space for less
- A genuine local community rather than an expat-heavy environment
- Close enough to Kuta for school runs and errands when needed
The trade-offs
Are Guling is early in its development arc. Amenities are sparse, internet can be inconsistent in more remote spots, and the expat family social infrastructure is thin. Families who move here know what they are trading.
